In general, the concept of the game console can be divided into five types of products. There is the home video-game console, handheld game consoles, arcade games, computer games, and mobile phone game consoles (e.g. smart-phones). The main components of any console that plays game includes a CPU, memory, storage media, a video and audio output device, a signal input device, and so forth. A game machine can differ according to its size, its main use (smart-phones play mobile game and make calls, for instance) and there are some game consoles that can divided between categories, such as the kind that can be played as a T.V. game console or taken "On the go" as a handheld gaming console. Clearly there are many kinds of game consoles, but they are all united in that they provide a great deal of fun to players!

A Short History of Game Consoles

From the birth of the first game console all the way to the 21st century game consoles as we know them have been around for nearly 50 years. Although the market has had some ups and downs (some big successes and taking some nasty hits) the game console continues to be an integral part of family entertainment.

While some major colleges and research locations had rudimentary games before 1972 on supercomputers these were not for everyday use by normal citizens. However, in that year of 1972 a company known as Atari developed a game called, "Pong," which was the first arcade game when people would play it in the bars it was available at and led to the creation of the arcade industry. Not long after more companies started making arcade games which resulted in titles like, "Pac-Man," which achieved a revenue of $1 billion and became a beloved classic and legend of the arcade era. As time went on the first home game consoles were manufactured with the basic framework being, "One console, a separate controller, a shell, and the replaceable game cassette," which revolutionized home entertainment and brought, "The arcade," into everyone's houses!

During the 1980's there was a market-crash in video-games when it came to the home console era. Sometimes referred to as, "Atari Shock," it was when the market was saturated with so many mediocre games for the home consoles people lost interest in home consoles and preferred arcades for some time. During this era the Japanese Nintendo Company slowly began its rise to power with its attempt to revitalize the home console market. Hence, in 1983 Nintendo's own FC/NES was born which featured a cartridge video-game platform. The FC opened the chapter to a whole new era of home video-gaming, laying the foundation for Nintendo's dominance in the home video-gaming market for years into the future. At this time many classic games were born such as, "Super Mario Bros," "Battle City," "Contra," and more! Then in 1989 a challenger entered the market as Sega launched its MD along with the game, "Sonic the Hedgehog." It became a Worldwide hit and took-up almost half the market-share of European and American markets, heavily competing with Nintendo. It is also notable that in 1989 Nintendo released the first handheld console in history, the Game Boy, one of the longest-lived consoles in the history of video-games with cumulative sales of more than 100 million units. This of course also means that Nintendo was the initial leader when it came to the beginning of the era of handheld games.

From the 8-bit FC to the 16-bit SFC, Nintendo still was the market leader of the home game console market (despite Sega taking-up a chunk of sales) until the release of the Sony PlayStation in 1994. This new console completely overthrew the dominance of Nintendo for a decade and opened-up the era of 3D games. In 1994, in an effort to compete in this increasingly-busy marketplace Sega introduced the first-ever 32-bit game console, the Sega Saturn. During this time the PlayStation was winning the, "Console War," with the most sales compared to Nintendo or Sega. In 1996, so that it could compete, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo 64, with the biggest innovation at that time being the addition of an analog joystick and an optional vibrator that would be attached to the gamepad. During this period a wide-range of other various consoles were introduced by console manufacturers in an effort to compete for market-share and many classic games were born.

As the 1990's concluded Sony and Nintendo became the two biggest competitors, with Sega attempting one last console in 1999, the Sega Dreamcast, before stopping console production and focusing only on software as the 21st century began. At this dawn of the 21st century Sony and Nintendo were developing new consoles with the PlayStation 2 coming on the scene in 2000 and the Gamecube in 2001--plus another competitor entered the fray--the Xbox. Created by known computer-maker Microsoft it was that company's attempt to enter the home console market and it launched in 2001 as well (followed by the Xbox 360 in 2005). As the marketplace became more and more competitive the release of the PlayStation 3 occurred in 2006, with the console not only supporting Blu-Ray discs and gaming, but the addition of music and video-streaming capabilities plus the ability to connect to Sony's first attempt at handheld consoles, the PS Portable. The PS3 also offered online games. In 2006 there was also the release of Nintendo's console the Wii. The Wii released on November 19th, 2006 and introduced motion-sensing to video-game consoles. It was a huge hit. During 2001-2007 Nintendo and Sony both innovated in handheld devices, with newer versions of the Game Boy, the Nintendo Dual Screen being invented, and Sony releasing its PSP devices. In 2013 the PlayStation 4 was released as well as the Xbox One, followed in 2015 by Nintendo leading the way in innovation with its Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch was unique in how it combined handheld home video-gaming. As time goes on it should be expected that more opportunities will arise for innovation and as nostalgia for the past become more popular a combination of classic gaming and innovative ideas will continue.

Development Prospects

In 2019 the Asia-Pacific region will generate $72.2 billion in game revenue, with this number accounting for 47% of total global revenue. This is up 7.6% year-on-year. North America remains the second largest game market, accounting for over a quarter of the console market--$39.6 billion in revenue, up 11.7% year-on-year. The U.S. gaming market alone will generate $36.9 billion in revenue, with this driven by console revenue growth. In regards to console growth, it accounted for $18.5 billion/50% of the U.S. gaming market.

About Our Consoles

When it comes to the product classification of Cheertone game consoles our main console products fall into three categories: mini-arcade, handheld game, and video game.

Our three types of game consoles are designed to have a more, "Classic," feel and just like World-famous game companies like Nintendo and Sony, our products have their own unique advantages and characteristics. First, they are more affordable and appeal to fans of inexpensive and classic/retro fans who can't necessarily afford to buy a Sony or Nintendo product. Second, with an appearance that is very similar to classic game consoles but an inside configuration that is modern and not inferior or glitch-filled, play is very smooth. Third, the gaming market is seeing a resurgence of nostalgia and these console products fit that popular trend of enjoying classic games--plus the retro appearance gives our consoles a collectible aspect as well.

Cheertone's main console products are suitable for every age group. For children the console is a great way to be entertained and allows children to exercise their hands and thinking-skills as they play games that develop their motor skills, cognitive ability, and attention level. For adults, video-games also exercise the brain and help with focus, but also make for a great bit of leisure-time, allowing adults to temporarily forget the stress of work and revisit that nostalgic happiness of their childhood. Also, video-games are great for families as as they assist parents in finding a way to interact and have fun with their children. Additionally, fans of the nostalgic find our console to be a great collectible thanks to its retro appearance.

Cheertone did a lot of market research before deciding to develop three types of consoles-- the mini-arcade machine, handheld game console and TV game console.

The mini-arcade is designed to imitate a large arcade's appearance with a detachable joystick, game buttons full of texture (with anti-skid features), and smooth and pleasant play. The arcade setup itself also features classic games with the ability to support NES format and TF card insertion. In addition, many of the games can support a single player or two players in many modes. The packaging of the box is skylight design which allows people to see the game machine and get excited about opening it up and playing it.

For the handheld game console, the design is very mini and retro--the overall size is about the same as a mobile phone. This results in a retro-looking product that is lightweight, easy to put in a bag, can be taken, "on the go," anywhere, and enjoyed anytime. The classic cross-button design is used with anti-slip design on the buttons. There is a large number of classic games so that the needs of retro fans looking for wide-range of options is met. The packaging box features a skylight that allows gamers to peer-in and see the perfect fusion of retro and fashionable design that the console has.

For the TV video-game game console we have mini single-player consoles, two-player consoles, and a variety of emulator formats as well as some video consoles that can output either in AV or HDMI. There are 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit, and 64-bit game consoles within these types, and the most obvious difference is the video-quality of the picture displayed on the screen. In other words, the higher the number of bits, the greater the video-quality of the game console.
